Too Many Men a Problem? Nah

Can there ever be too many men ?   Some think more men, more problems.  But now a new study says that may not be true. The study focused on the fact that, since men are more prone to competitive risk-taking and violent behavior, what happens when the number of men is greater than the number of women in a population?    According to research by Florida State University Professor of Psychology Jon Maner, the answers might not be what you expect, says newswise.com.   “ When men outnumber women in a given ecology, intuition might suggest that rates of violent crime would skyrocket, marriages would destabilize and many children would be born out of wedlock, ” the web site quotes him .  “ Intriguingly, the opposite has been observed. ”   Although ecological sex ratios have been investigated extensively in nonhuman  species,  they  play a crucial role in humans as well. Many factors can produce sex ratio imbalances, includ...

Women Execs: Think You'll be Exempt from Sexual Harassment? Guess Again

I don't suppose it comes as a surprise but women in leadership positions face more sexual harassment . I was never in a position of power but I worked with lots of male co-workers and vendors and there were a couple of times -- well, maybe, quite a few more -- I was touched inappropriately. Power in the workplace does not stop women's exposure to sexual harassment, according to newswise.com. "On the contrary, women with supervisory positions are harassed more than women employees," the web site reports. These are the results from a new study from the Swedish Institute for Social Research at Stockholm University, which examined the conditions in Sweden, USA and Japan. By analyzing the responses from three surveys, researchers at the Swedish Institute for Social Research, SOFI, at Stockholm University, together with fellow American and Japanese researchers, have studied the prevalence of sexual harassment across the organizational hierarchy.  "The stud...

Praise Women and They'll Want to Be the Boss?

Doesn't it just figure?  A new study finds that highlighting women's achievements makes us want to be the boss. According to newswise.com,  p ublic feedback about a woman's performance can significantly increase her willingness to lead, even in male-dominated environments, new research indicates. And the teams led by these women are subsequently more likely to perform well. The research, by Dr Jingnan Chen from the University of Exeter Business School, found increasing the number of men in mixed-gender teams has a negative impact on women's willingness to lead, especially on tasks seen as stereotypically male. Publicly acknowledging women's abilities and achievements, however, helps to alleviate this effect, the web site reports. I hate to say it but doesn't this make you just want to scream? How dare we take advantage of our achievements?!  Is this men condescending to us? In male-stereotyped industries, women in both mixed and single gender groups ar...

Women Don't Really Want Lower-Paying Jobs. So Why Do We Pick the Majors That Place Us There?

Why do women select colleges  that have lower earning potential ?  According to a new survey, we do. Newswise.com reports that e ven when both male and female college students say they want to pursue a major with the best earnings prospects, "the majors men choose are higher paying than the majors women choose." In a new study, sociologist  Natasha Quadlin  of The Ohio State University found that “the logics of major choice” may lead women to select different majors from men, despite having similar preferences.  “Even when women place great emphasis on earnings, other preferences may ultimately win out for them,” said Quadlin, assistant professor of  sociology at Ohio State .  One possible competing preference: finding a field that’s a good fit.  So is that why we're teachers and nurses?  But wait.  We're also doctors and lawyers and fire chiefs. Quadlin surveyed 2,720 students from three higher education institutions that ...

Ha! We Knew It All Along

We knew this all along but we'll let you in on the secret.  A majority of Americans think women are just as competent as men , if not more so, according to the Los Angeles Times. Among the 25% of respondents who did perceive a gender difference in smart, most said that women were more intelligent and competent than men, the LA Times reported. This all came out of a scientific study published Thursday in the journal American Psychologist that examines Americans’ perceptions of women over the past 70 years. “It’s a pretty dramatic shift,” says  Alice Eagly , a social psychologist at Northwestern University in Illinois who led the work, at the site. “If you think women are still seen as less capable than men, then forget it. That is not the case.” Where did it ever come from, this idea that women can't do the same work as men? Pretty simple.  It all comes down to three things. "Eagly and her co-authors analyzed 16 public opinion polls spanning from 1946 to 2018...
